Better refrigeration through less carbon
Our refrigeration equipment is the largest contributor to our climate footprint. The cornerstone of our climate protection and energy management efforts is building a sustainable refrigeration program. Our bottling system around the world has approximately 10 million coolers and vending machines in place today.
We are working to improve the efficiency of our refrigeration equipment and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced by this equipment.
- We’ve set a goal to improve the energy efficiency of our cooling equipment by 40 to 50 percent by 2010 and we are well on our way to reaching that goal. A large part of our progress is due to our work developing an energy management system that delivers energy savings of up to 35 percent when placed on our equipment. In Ireland all new cooler purchases will be fitted with LED lighting, low energy fan motors and condenser motors as well as an energy management system
- We are phasing out the use of HFCs in all new equipment by 2015. In Ireland all coolers bought in the last 14 years are HFC free
- We’ve identified a natural refrigerant gas to replace HFC refrigerant gas
Our work to make our equipment in Ireland has been ratified by The Carbon Trust
The Carbon Trust is delighted to be working with Coca‑Cola HBC Northern Ireland as an active stakeholder in their project to make Coca‑Cola cold drink equipment more energy efficient.
We have been involved with the project from its inception and are excited that the tests conducted on the upgraded chilled-cabinets show that very significant enhancements in energy efficiency have been achieved.
We congratulate CCHBC Northern Ireland for the considerable investment they are making towards a more sustainable environment and look forward to developing our relationship on further innovative projects.
Background
In December 2009, the Coca‑Cola system announced its expectation that 100 percent of their new vending machines and coolers will be HFC-free by 2015. We're hopeful our aggregate demand will encourage supply as a means of accelerating the transition to HFC-free refrigeration equipment. This announcement is a direct result of work with Greenpeace that began in 2000. Read more.
Did you know? As a result of the Coca‑Cola system's commitment to eliminate the use of HFCs in this equipment, carbon emission reductions will exceed 52.5million metric tons over the life of the equipment - the equivalent of taking more than 11 million cars off the road in one year.
The Coca‑Cola Company co-founded the Refrigerants, Naturally! initiative in 2004. This food and beverage industry alliance addresses global climate change through promotion of hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) -free alternative refrigeration technologies that protect the Earth's climate and ozone layer.
