Share a Coke | Iconic campaigns | Coca-Cola IE

When the sun’s shining and the weather’s warm, there’s nothing better than an ice-cold Coke. In 2013 and 2014, we gave the summer months a touch of Coca-Cola magic and gave you more than just a refreshing drink; you got a Coke with your name on it!


Gone was our iconic Coca-Cola logo. Hundreds of names – from Aodhán to Zoe – took centre stage on our labels and it wasn’t long before you had Share a Coke trending. We read some touching stories, saw some awesome selfies and shared some special moments of happiness with you and your loved ones.


Where did the idea come from?


Marketing director Lucie Austin and creative excellence lead Jeremy Rudge, who were planning Coca-Cola’s summer campaign, came up with the idea in our offices in Sydney in 2011.



After being presented with a wall of cans stacked horizontally, each with different names on, they knew they’d hit on something. More than 250 million named bottles and cans were sold that summer in a nation of just over 23 million people.


What are some of our highlights?


In April 2013, we sent a few personalised bottles as gifts to celebrities, and we then let the public discover personalised bottles for themselves so they could be the first to break the news.


Within five months there were more than 10,000 mentions on Facebook and almost 6,000 tweets from fans. Our #ShareaCoke hashtag was trending and making headlines.


For our first TV ad, we asked people who they’d most like to share a Coke with, which sparked fans to do the same on social media. The following year we introduced the public to Bobby the dog, who starred in our advert (and on our bottles).


We also took Share a Coke on tour so the entire nation could grab a bottle with their name on it. And for those unable to clink bottles with their loved ones, we created a Facebook app so they could share a virtual Coke instead.


In 2014, we launched the Share a Coke online shop. For the first time fans were able to personalise a glass Coca-Cola contour bottle. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at one of the factories where our name bottles were made:
