With just a few days to go before the start of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, athletes and fans around the world are preparing for weeks of thrilling action, world records and personal triumphs in scenic Brazil.
Here’s a roundup of the people, places and events you need to know to prepare for every leap, lap and lunge when the action kicks off on the 5th August…
When Rio de Janeiro was announced as the host city in 2009, Brazil became the first South American country to be awarded the Summer Games, which ironically, will be held during the nation's winter season. The Games will take place at six locations throughout the country, with Manaus, Sao Paolo, Belo Horizonte, Salvador and Brasilia joining Rio as home to the 28 events. Rio will also play host to the 2016 Paralympic Games, which will be held 7-18 September.
According to the Rio Olympic Committee, the athletes’ village will be the largest ever, with 80,000 chairs, 70,000 tables and 60,000 clothes hangers among the fixtures needed to house all the participants, the number of which will exceed 10,000.

More than 180 national Olympic committees from around the world have qualified at least one athlete. Brazil, as the host country, is expected to have the most athletes in action, while smaller nations like Kiribati and Andorra will have one-person delegations. South Sudan and Kosovo are expected to make their Olympic debuts in Rio, bringing the number of nations who have participated in at least one Olympics to 206.
Rio will stage a record 28 events, from archery to wrestling. Of course, football will be one of the most popular sports in the home country, while global favourites like track and field, gymnastics and swimming will have plenty of incredible action.
This Olympics also features two new sports: rugby sevens, which is a shorter version of the traditional rugby contest played with seven players instead of 15; and golf, which makes its return to the Olympics for the first time since 1904 with a 72-hole tournament featuring some of the world’s top men’s and women’s players.
